CAN WE TRUST OUR PUBLIC OFFICIALS?

Experience proves we can trust them for one thing. To look out for their own self-interest. Far too often, and increasingly so, Honor, Integrity, and the Law are sacrificed by public officials in exchange for narrowly defined self interest. Defined as:

PROSECUTORS - win conviction by any means regardless of innocence or guilt, regardless of law. Our "wins" are the basis of our performance evaluation and our peers' measure of our effectiveness as trial lawyers. So what if some poor young kid is burdened for life with a record and YOU, the taxpayer pays for the prosecution and incarceration.

POLICE - increase our budget and our powers. Elect Judges and Legislators that will enable us to arrest anybody, anytime, without accountability to the Law. Protect ourselves by expanding our discretionary powers to beyond question. Create excuses to make arrests. Our numbers of arrests are used in performance evaluations and used to justify our budget.

CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS - Get the next Court Appointment at taxpayer expense. Even if this requires I bully my innocent client into a guilty plea bargain so the Judge does not have his docket burdened with a trial. For HIRED COUNSEL; Get the money upfront then press for plea bargain to avoid the time expense of a trial. Sacrifice the innocent to maintain my relations with prosecutors so I may get a favorable plea bargain for my next guilty client with big bucks.

JUDGES - Get re-elected. The citizens don't vote. Police and Prosecutors do. Therefore tilt my rulings in favor of the Police and Prosecutors. Ignore Constitutional violations by Police and Prosecutorial misconduct to avoid upsetting this voting block. My docket is used as a measure of my performance. Therefore I make sure I give criminal defendants attorneys that are effective in avoiding trial by securing plea bargained guilty pleas. Those who demand a trial in MY court are punished with a sure conviction and a sentence 10 times the plea bargain offer. The Guilty who can afford high priced counsel get favorable plea bargains an go free. The Innocent who are poor get a conviction and jail. THE TAXPAYER PAYS THE COSTS.

JUSTICES OF APPELLATE COURTS - Hmm, the Defendant is clearly innocent. However; If I overturn this conviction it will make the police, prosecutor, and Judge look bad. They, and their voting block, may not choose me in the next election. If I affirm it no one will know and this poor slob's life is already ruined. Oath to uphold and defend? I have to look out for myself.

IS SOCIETY SAFER AS A RESULT?

ONE THING FOR SURE; TAXPAYERS ARE A LOT POORER

AND A LOT OF INNOCENT PEOPLE GO TO JAIL.
